Thunder Thoughts continues to break down the bullpen with the help of pitching coach Scott Aldred. In today’s installment, Aldred and I discuss Michael Gardner.
Ashmore: Let’s move on to Michael Gardner. What can you tell me about him?
Aldred: “Mike Gardner, I’ve seen him a lot. He’s not throwing quite as well as he did last year at this point, but I expect him to get things going here shortly. He’s got a nice sinker, slider, change.
Ashmore: It seems like every time I see Gardy, he has issues with walks…whether it be getting ahead of guys and losing them, or not being able to get a first-pitch strike and losing confidence.
Aldred: “It’s about him pounding the zone a little bit better. What gets him into trouble right now are his walks, his walks are way up. And that’s not Gardy. He needs to pound the zone, and when he does, they don’t hit him very good.”
