The New York Yankees have announced they’ve dealt Jeff Marquez, Jhonny Nunez and Wilson Betemit in exchange for Nick Swisher and Kaneoka Texeira.
It made sense to acquire Swisher, as the Yankees had no internal options ready to play first base on a full-time basis in 2009.
However, I didn’t see the point in including either Nunez or Texeira. I hate to see them give up Nunez, who I felt had the potential to become the Yankees closer one day, and I knew that the Yankees organization was very, very excited to have him on board.
What do you guys think of the trade?

I think the Yankees see Texeira as a close replacement to Nunez, the difference being that Nunez would have needed protection on the 40-man, whereas Texeria wont.

I like the trade. I don’t think the Yankees saw Nunez as a potential closer though.

there’s a good side gig for you – track the two of them as they progress to the show. from a distance, i couldn’t make a quick informed choice between them

Mike,
Isn’t it assumed that it would have been hard for the Yanks to put Nunez on the 40 man and thus he could have been had for next to nothing. It would be hard to put him on the 40 man and there isn’t much room with all the relievers we have on there plus Melancon isn’t on it yet and Cox has to be added b/c he is Rule 5 eligible. If you say Nunez=Texiera then the guy who has more time to work his way up w/o having to be put on the 40 than he could be more valuable

Not a bad trade at all…..surprised me when I heard it.But so glad Wilson Betemit is gone.He looked like a deer in headlights playing 3B.

You’d have to think they could have found a spot for Nunez…I like him much more than I do Cox, seems like his velocity never really came back.

I liked Nunez, but we have so much bullpen depth I can’t worry about it.

Marquez, and Nunez are the lucky ones from the Trenton staff this year, because they will probably get better looks at making the WS than they would have with the Yankees. Good luck guys, I’m sure that most of your fellow pitchers at Trenton would love to be in your position.
