Action Jackson

April 4, 2008

Briefly caught up with Austin Jackson after the exhibition game on Tuesday.  Here’s what he had to say…

On whether he’s going in with the attitude that he’ll be in Trenton all year…

“Hopefully, if I’m playing well enough, I would like to get called up.  That’s pretty much everybody’s thinking.  But I don’t have a problem with being here.  I like it here.  I like the environment and everything like that, it’s nice.”

His thoughts on the “Outfield of Dreams” with him, Tabata and Curtis…

“We’re definitely a great outfield.  We all have speed, and we know each other’s speed, so there’s not going to be too many balls dropping out there.”

On the exhibition game…

“It was good to get it out of the way, the first game or whatever.  But once you start playing a lot more, you get used to it, and you’ll calm down a little bit more at the plate and things like that.”

Cabrera, Eiland, Kennedy and more…

April 4, 2008

Over the next few days, I’ll have some blog items with quotes from Melky Cabrera, Ian Kennedy and Dave Eiland — all Thunder alums.  I spoke to all three yesterday at Yankee Stadium, with some Thunder questions mixed in…

I’ll also have a special feature with Harlan Chamberlain, who was gracious enough to answer several of my questions before Yankees batting practice.  We’ll talk about the difficulties of following his son’s career through the minors, and the biggest thing that Joba has taken from his father…

I know nobody cares about how I started following this team.  Believe me, I get enough cheery e-mails reminding me of how beloved I am to some.

But my only memories of David Eckstein were as a fan, and he was my favorite player on that magical 1999 Trenton Thunder team.  So, of course, getting to chat with him for a few minutes now that I’m on the media side of things was one of the highlights of my career.

We talked about his time on the Thunder, the Red Sox losing him via waivers, and winning a World Series MVP.

So stay tuned for that as well…

Friday Notes

April 4, 2008

** Some of these have been reported earlier, but I’m not sure what had and what hasn’t…anyway, Baseball America is reporting the following Yankees moves:

Signed: RHP Chace Vacek
Released: RHP Brady Martinez, RHP Luke Massetti, RHP Nick Peterson, RHP Elvys Quezada, RHP Guillermo Villalona, 1B Chris Raber, SS Ryan Wehrle, SS Chris Woodward, OF Jason Rees

** Interesting press release out of Scranton involving Lehigh Valley, as each team’s general manager has entered into a friendly wager.  Scranton’s Jeremy Ruby and Lehigh Valley’s Kurt Landes have agreed that the GM of the team that loses more games to the other has to serve as a batboy at the winning team’s stadium.

“The Yankees are planning on bringing home the bacon,” said Yankees Executive Vice President Jeremy Ruby in the release.

“It’s a great way to kick off the rivalry between the two teams. Plus it’s going to be a lot of fun watching Landes wearing a Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees uniform and going to work at PNC Field.”
