Pre-Game Notes: Chad Jennings is reporting that Alfredo Aceves will be starting tonight for Scranton.

According to Thunder manager Tony Franklin, Yankees reliever Brian Bruney will be making a start for the Thunder on Saturday.

“From what I’m told, he’s on his way,” Franklin said.

“I think he’s going to start for us.  We welcome him.  I don’t know how many innings he’s going to throw, I don’t know how many pitches he’s allowed to throw.  But he’s coming.”

Bruney may be in Trenton as early as tomorrow.  Chase Wright will follow him, and will not be bumped a day.

Ramiro Pena is scheduled to miss Saturday and Sunday’s games as a result of playing in the Futures Game.

Johnny Estrada has been added to Harrisburg’s roster.  The big league backstop is rehabbing a sore elbow.

In-Game Updates (LIVE from the ballpark): No chance of this one starting on time.  It’s 6:50, and it’s raining pretty good and the tarp’s on the field.  My mom was kind enough to call and let me know that a “large yellow spot” was headed my way…so I’m hoping she’s talking about the radar and not some sort of gelatinous blob that I should be keeping a lookout for.  Time to listen to some Sara Evans in the meantime…I’ll keep y’all posted.

7:10 and the tarp’s coming off the field.  I’d imagine this one gets started in the 7:35-7:45 range.

Game started around 7:40. Phil Coke with a 1-2-3 inning.

Pena scores on an error by the shortstop…1-0 Thunder, B1.

RBI single by Pilittere, now 2-0 Trenton, B1.

Sorry for the lack of updates, just got done with a 15 minute session with Mark Newman.  Got a LOT of good info, and I’ll try to post that once I get home tonight.

2-0, B4.

Coke has allowed one hit through four…and it was a very questionable hit.  The ball was hit to Cody Ehlers, who had to go to his left maybe a step or two and try to backhand it…and he just missed it.  If that’s the only hit Coke allows, could be an issue…

Don’t know if they got the same rain in Toledo that we got or what, but Alfredo Aceves only lasted three innings for Scranton.  He allowed two hits and struck out two…so he certainly wasn’t pulled for pitching poorly.

2-0 Thunder, B5.  LOTS of talk about that Ehlers play in here right now.

Coke gave up his first legit hit…a little fly ball to right that Edwar Gonzalez must have lost in the lights, because he seemed to misread it.

Daniel Boone just deposited a Phil Coke offering over the left field fence for a three-run shot.  3-2, Curve, T6.  This game changed pretty quickly…

Coke out after six, Melancon allows one hit but nothing else in the 7th.  3-2 Altoona, B7.

3-2 heading into B8.

Melancon’s coming out for the ninth, so it would appear he’ll be finishing the game…assuming Trenton can’t put together a run in the bottom of the frame.

Does it qualify as breaking news that Mark Melancon’s human?  He’s allowed two runs here in the 9th.  One might argue that he shouldn’t have come out for the third since guys have been getting loose in the pen…

Melancon out after two and a third.  Eric Wordekemper in for the last two outs.

Final Score
: 7-2, Curve.

Post-Game Notes: Radar gun readings!  I remember when I needed to do these all the time.  Phil Coke was pitching inbetween 90 and 94 MPH tonight.

Mark Melancon was hitting 93.

I read this Ed Price story just like all of you guys.  I can tell you that there was a Rockies scout here maybe a week or two ago…couldn’t tell you whether he was specifically here to see Melancon, but Melancon did pitch on one of the nights that scout was here.

As Melancon grew up a Rockies fan, it would make a bit of sense if he were to head there…from a baseball perspective, Melancon should be one of the Yankees untouchables.  And he certainly shouldn’t be trade bait for Brian Fuentes.

Someone asked about Brett Smith a while back.  He’s still rehabbing from shoulder surgery.  Couldn’t say whether it’s a labrum or what…

Thunder Thoughts: If you want to watch the Thunder radio broadcast team freak out over a spider, this is worth a click.

I talked to Anthony Claggett about not making the All-Star team and about his progress since joining the Thunder, so stay tuned for that…

Speaking of Claggett, his folks are here all the way from California.  Got to talk to them a little bit yesterday…nice people.

Other things I have to do are the “Getting To Know” with Austin Jackson and an “Around the EL” with Daniel Bard.

A few kids wanted me to sign autographs for them down the first base line before the game.  After pointing out my relative insignificance numerous times, I relented.  So if you see any Ashmore autographed pennants on eBay, they’re legit.
