Victor Victorious, Pitching Matchups, Etc.

Victor Zambrano posted a solid line for the Thunder tonight, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out five over five scoreless innings in the team’s 8-2 win in Reading tonight.

Assuming he sticks around for another start, he’ll be facing the same Phillies club in Trenton on Saturday night.

But it’s Harrisburg that comes into Trenton first for a three-game set.  Hey Mike, can I get some probable pitching matchups?  Sure thing…

Tuesday, 8/19: TRE George Kontos (4-11, 3.78) vs. HAR Adrian Alaniz (0-5, 3.97)

Wednesday, 8/20: TRE Eric Hacker (6-3, 2.73) vs. HAR Cory VanAllen (3-2, 4.99)

Thursday, 8/21: TRE Jason Jones (12-5, 2.89) vs. HAR Bobby Brownlie (8-3, 4.00)

Thursday’s matchup is particularly intriguing, as it would be Bobby Brownlie’s first game pitched in the state since he left the Newark Bears for the Indians organization in 2007.  That, and of course it’s a rematch of the Eastern League All-Star Game pitching matchup.

Brownlie, of course, is a former Cubs top prospect who starred locally at Rutgers.

I’m also particularly excited about Tuesday’s matchup, since Alaniz will be pitching.  I interviewed him last season while he was playing for the Vermont Lake Monsters, but have yet to actually see him pitch.  He put up outstanding numbers in the New York-Penn League last year, but isn’t yet considered a top prospect for the Nationals

There are a lot of intriguing matchups on the horizon at Waterfront Park.  I talked about Zambrano already, but Friday would also mark the return to Trenton of Jeff Marquez, who hasn’t pitched at home yet this year.

With Marquez, Zambrano and Kontos set to face Reading this weekend, the R-Phils would tentatively send Andrew Carpenter, Tyson Brummett and Edgar Garcia.  So the Thunder will avoid their two best starters, Antonio Bastardo and Adam Eaton.
