The guys over at River Ave. Blues — and you’ve probably seen this already since you should be reading them 10 times a day as it is — have their take on the Rule 5 eligible players this year and who should get protected.
If my math is correct, 24 players who spent time in Trenton this year would be eligible to be claimed by other teams; most notably Reegie Corona, Colin Curtis, Grant Duff, Ivan Nova and Eduardo Nunez.
While anyone who thinks the farm system is as deep as it once was is kidding themselves, there’s still clearly some top talent here and the Yankees will be sure to lose at least one of the guys, if only temporarily.
A sleeper pick? George Kontos. It’s a low risk, high reward choice, as you could keep him on your 60-day DL, give him 30 days in a rehab assignment to pitch his way back into game shape and see what he does in the big leagues. If it doesn’t pan out, simply return him to the Yankees.
