2009 Thunder A-Z: Lance Pendleton

Before 2009: Going to try to shorten this up a bit so I can try to blow through as many of these as possible…but Pendleton was drafted out of by the Yankees in the 4th round of the 2005 draft out of Rice.  After pitching well in Staten Island later that year, Pendleton was injured and missed all of 2006 and most of 2007.

In 2008, he spent the entire season at Low-A Charleston and put together a decent year, posting a 7-9 record in 28 games with a 3.52 ERA.

2009: Pendleton arguably put together his best season as a pro in 2009, spending the first four months of his season in High-A Tampa, where he was selected to pitch in the Florida State League All-Star Game thanks to an 11-5 record and 2.68 ERA in 20 appearances.  He struggled at times when he was summoned to Double-A Trenton on the first day of August, and posted a 1-3 mark with a 4.47 ERA in eight starts.

After 2009: The 26-year-old righty will most likely start 2010 back with Trenton.  At the very least, he’ll probably spend the first half of the season there unless he gets out of the gate hot, which is very possible.  Thanks to previous health issues — big shocker that a Rice pitcher was injured, I know — his age is now working against him, and he’ll need a standout season to keep himself from blending in with every other pitching prospect the Yankees have.
