Van Benschoten Just Happy To Be Pitching

No one would have batted an eye if John Van Benschoten had complained about being sent to Double-A for the first time since a 2006 rehab appearance with Altoona.

Before that, his only stay in Double-A was in 2003, when he was coming up in the Pirates system after being taken with the eighth overall pick in the 2001 draft.

Now with the Yankees after a tough season in the White Sox organization last year, the soon to be 30-year-old righty is just happy to be pitching somewhere after starting the year in extended spring training in what he described as a “holding pattern.”

“It beats getting up at seven in the morning and having to go in the Florida heat, and not necessarily having a lazy day, but it just didn’t feel like baseball,” he said.

“It’s time to get the season going, it’s time to play at seven o’clock.”

For now, Van Benschoten will be used as a long reliever, despite having been a starter for most of his career.

“As long as I get to pitch, that’s what I’m looking for,” he said.

“I’m just excited to get out here.  It’s good to get with another organization and see what I can do.  Being around for so many years, I have a lot of friends, and I talked to them and there’s a lot of them that don’t have jobs.  It’s just good to have a job, really.”

Even if that job is in a level he blew past seven seasons ago?

“If you look at it on paper, it might (be difficult),” Van Benschoten said.

“But, for my mindset, not at all.  For me, it’s an opportunity.  You never know what can happen, and that’s the attitude you’ve got to take.  You’ve got a job and you’re playing.  Do your best to get better.  You’re obviously not in the big leagues, so there’s something for you to work on.”

So the short-term goal is to pitch his way out of Trenton, get up to Triple-A and then see what happens…right?

“I don’t want to pitch my way out of anywhere,” he said.

“I pitched my way here.  Wherever I go from here is fine with me.  I’ve got a job, I’ve got a uniform.  These days, that’s pretty good.”
