600? Today? Book It

July 24, 2010

I can say with great confidence that Alex Rodriguez will hit his 600th career home run today.  Yes, this post does fall into the “it’s my blog and I can do what I want to on it” category, but there is some logic here.

I’ve seen 600 before.  In New York.  Twice.

Anyone who knows me even a little bit knows there is no team I care more about than the New York Rangers.  And during the 2006-07 season, the Blueshirts had two future Hall of Famers on the verge of reaching the 600 goal plateau; Brendan Shanahan and Jaromir Jagr.

While the 600 Home Run club is certainly an exclusive one — Rodriguez would become the seventh player in Major League Baseball history to do it — the 600 goal club is hardly anything to sneeze at, with just 18 players included.  I’ve been fortunate enough to see two of them get there…

I didn’t go to those games hoping to see a 600th goal scored.  I got tickets to the Rangers season opener that year, and Shanahan started the year with 598 goals.  The opener’s a big deal, and I wanted to be there…I lucked out and got 600 as well.

For Jagr’s 600th, I got tickets to a game against Tampa Bay just hoping to see a different goalie play for the Lightning — which I did, Johan Holmqvist — but I also saw him get beat by Jagr for his 600th career NHL goal.

Today, I’m here at Yankee Stadium because I wanted to interview Kansas City reliever Kanekoa Texeira.  Having a chance to possibly cover A-Rod’s 600th home run never crossed my mind when I applied for a credential for the game several weeks ago.

So it all makes sense.  Stumbling onto number 600 in New York has already happened to me twice.  So don’t be surprised if Alex Rodriguez helps me complete the hat trick…
