Noesi, Mitchell To Scranton; Betances and Banuelos To Trenton…Aceves Is Back

August 23, 2010

Wow.  A LOT of stuff is going down today.  Both Hector Noesi and D.J. Mitchell have been promoted to Triple-A Scranton.  The promotions of Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances are also now official.  In addition, Alfredo Aceves is with the team and told reporters he’ll be pitching two innings tomorrow.

Noesi, a member of the Yankees 40-man roster, was 8-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 17 appearances for the Thunder, including 16 starts.  He briefly address reporters after the promotion.

“I’m surprised, because I came from Tampa, you know,” he said.

“Came from Tampa to Trenton, then to Scranton right now.  So I’m so surprised.”

Mitchell was 11-4 with a 4.06 ERA in 23 appearances for the Thunder this season, including 22 starts.  His best outing may very well have been his last, which marked his ninth straight quality start.

Mitchell did not find out he was heading up until today when he was called into the manager’s office by Tony Franklin and Tommy Phelps.

“I really had no idea (it was coming),” Mitchell said.

“A lot of guys were talking, but I really didn’t know who it was going to be.  I knew it was probably either going to be me or Noesi, or it could have been both of us.  I didn’t really know, it was out of my hands.”

Mitchell will be making his debut in Scranton later this week, and is excited for his first stay in Triple-A.

“It’s great, I’m one step closer,” he said.

“I’ve been working towards this all year and it’s nice to get an opportunity to get a step closer.  I’ve just tried to build off of each start and each day.  I’ve learned a lot playing with these guys.”

Banuelos is scheduled to start tonight if the game ever gets underway…as for Betances, well…he’s tall.  He’s also very good.  He said he had Tommy John surgery last August — although the recovery process wasn’t as long because it was ligament reinforcement — and that he feels good and has felt good ever since the procedure.

“I’ve had eight months, maybe a year to work on my mechanics alone and just focus day in and day out and do some bullpen work to help me out to where I’m at now,” he said.

“I’m just trying to take that direction towards home plate and keep my head on line.  That’s been the key.  Head on line’s been the key.  Once it goes off, I try to fix it the next pitch.”

Betances, who was 8-1 with High-A Tampa felt there was nothing left for him to prove down there.

“I’ve felt like I was ready,” he said.

“I know I hadn’t pitched last year, so I had to get some innings in, but I feel ready to pitch wherever they put me.  I feel good right now.”

Betances didn’t think he was on an innings count — he said he wasn’t sure if he could go more than 100 innings — but said his pitch count has been 80.

Aceves said he was slated to have one more game with the Thunder, saying he’ll pitch two innings with Trenton tomorrow.  Tony Franklin could not confirm the plan, and was not sure if Aceves would start or back up Betances, who is slated to debut tomorrow.

Game 128: Pre-Game Notes

August 23, 2010

7:05 PM — Can confirm through a team official that long-time PA voice Bill Bromberg is no longer with the organization.  Bill’s been doing games ever since I started going to games here as a fan in 1999, so it’ll be a little weird to not hear his voice at the ballpark.

4:55 PM — Lineups…

Adieny Hechavarria, SS
Eric Thames, LF
Shawn Bowman, 3B
Adam Calderone, RF

Austin Romine, C
Corban Joseph, 2B
Marcos Vechionacci, 1B
Damon Sublett, DH

Justin Snyder, 3B

Manny Baneulos, P

4:00 PM — It appears Hector Noesi may be the move…although with Betances not needing to be activated until Tuesday, we may not know until then.

Also, there may be more moves on the horizon made during the series.  Mark Newman is slated to be here, so hopefully things become a little more clear soon…

3:30 PM — Welcome to the pre-rainout edition of the pre-game notes.  Not a lot going on here yet, as is the case when I get here at this time anyway.

The Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances moves should, at least in part, become official today.  Not sure what the other side of it is just yet, though.  D.J. Mitchell is still the favorite, but there could be something else going on instead…
