(PR) Portland, ME – The Yankees top left-handed pitching prospect Manny Banuelos threw four scoreless innings, and the Trenton Thunder beat the Portland Sea Dogs 3-2 in ten innings Monday night in front of 2,701 at Hadlock Field. Cody Johnson’s tenth inning sacrifice fly gave Trenton the lead, and Naoya Okamoto picked-up his first save, shutting down Portland in the bottom of the tenth.
Melky Mesa gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning when he smacked a long, solo homerun over the left field wall. Mesa’s long ball was the first homerun for the Thunder, coming five games into the 2011 campaign.
Trenton lit-up the Hadlock Field scoreboard again in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Austin Romine led the inning off with his first double of 2011 on a ball that rolled all the way to right-center field wall. One batter later, Bradley Suttle laced a line drive down the left field line for his third double and third RBI of the season, as Romine scored easily on the play.
Game two of the three-game series with the Sea Dogs is Tuesday night at 6:00 PM, when the Thunder will send Ewing-native LHP Steve Garrison (0-0, 0.00) to the mound for his second start of 2011. Garrison will oppose RHP Alex Wilson (1-0, 5.40) for Portland. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.
