(PR) (TRENTON, NJ) – The Trenton Thunder (7-6) swept the Richmond Flying Squirrels (5-8) out of Central New Jersey, winning 6-3 on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park. Trenton starter Shaeffer Hall hurled seven shutout innings, and Austin Romine continued his impressive homestand at the plate by hitting two homeruns and driving in four runs.
Looking for their first series sweep and three-game winning streak of the season, the Thunder were able to take advantage of Richmond starter Eric Surkamp’s wildness. In the bottom of the third, Surkamp walked three Thunder hitters, including Austin Romine, to bring in the first Trenton run. A batter later, Austin Krum scored on Bradley Suttle’s double play groundout.
Romine was looking to do more damage his next time up, and he wasted no time, depositing the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth out of Waterfront Park and onto Route 29. After an infield hit for Romine in the seventh, the California native hammered a 3-2 pitch from Richmond reliever David Quinowski off of the batter’s eye in straight-away center field in the eighth, giving Trenton a 6-0 lead. Romine finished the night 3-4 with two homeruns and four runs batted in.
Those six runs would be more than plenty for the Missouri native and Thunder starting pitcher Shaeffer Hall. The lefty would hurl seven scoreless frames, surrendering only three hits and walking none.
The Thunder hit the road and head to Harrisburg for a 7:00 PM contest Thursday night from the capital city in Pennsylvania. It’s the first of a seven-game road trip for Trenton, who will play three in Harrisburg and four in Richmond. RHP Graham Stoneburner (1-1, 1.64) will get the pearl for the Thunder on Thursday and will oppose RHP Ryan Tatusko (0-2, 10.57) for the Senators. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM on the Trenton Thunder Radio Network.
