Thunder Split Doubleheader In Portland

May 28, 2011

(PR) (Portland, ME) – The Trenton Thunder (29-19) split a double header with the Portland Sea Dogs (14-32) on Saturday, winning game one 8-7 and losing game two 7-5. The Thunder came from behind to win in the afternoon, scoring eight unanswered runs to extend their winning streak to nine games. However, the streak would be halted in the evening as the Sea Dogs prevented another Trenton comeback, holding on for the win.

The Thunder found themselves in an early hole in game one as the Sea Dog’s Ryan Lavarnway hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first off of Thunder starter Kei Igawa. But, trailing 3-0 in the top of the third inning, Cody Johnson lit up the Trenton side of the scoreboard for the first time Saturday when he smacked a two-run homerun to straightway centerfield to cut into the Portland lead, 3-2.

After both teams traded two runs in the bottom of the third and top of the fourth, Trenton was looking to take their first lead in the top of the fifth. Jose Pirela began the frame with a triple off of the “Maine Monster” in left field and came in to score on an Addison Maruszak sacrifice fly that tied the score 5-5. With two on and two outs in the same inning, Corban Joseph doubled home two runs to give Trenton their first lead, 7-5.

In an 8-7 ball game, Josh Schmidt shut the door in the ninth for the Thunder to give them their ninth straight win.

Taking their nine-game winning streak with them to game two, the Thunder picked-up right where they left off offensively by plating two in the top of the first on RBI singles from Jose Gil and Addison Maruszak. However, the Sea Dogs scored seven runs in the bottom of the second off of Thunder starter Cory Arbiso and took a 7-2 lead.

Trenton chipped away at the lead by adding runs in the third and fifth innings with RBI’s from Gil and Pirela, but their comeback fell short. The Sea Dogs held on for a 7-5 victory, bringing a halt to the Thunder’s nine-game winning streak.

The Thunder are back in action Sunday at 1:00 PM as they continue their four-day, five-game Memorial Day weekend series with the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field in Maine. Trenton will send LHP Shaeffer Hall (3-3, 3.57) to mound Sunday. Hall will oppose Portland’s RHP Michael Lee (1-4, 4.89). Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.
