(PR) (Akron, OH) – A seven run seventh inning for the Trenton Thunder (54-48) provided enough fuel for the team to come from behind and take a 9-8 contest with the Akron Aeros (54-49) on Monday night at Canal Park in northeastern Ohio. Addison Maruszak and Rob Lyerly both drove in a pair of runs to lead Trenton’s offensive attack, and Pat Venditte hurled three strong innings of relief to grab his third win of the season. After the Aeros scored two runs in the bottom of the first on two Thunder errors, Maruszak and the Thunder chipped away at the lead over the next three frames. With two outs in the second, Maruszak lined a single into right field to put Trenton on the scoreboard. Then, with two away in the fourth and a runner at first base, the Thunder utility player smashed a double into right-centerfield to tie the score at 2-2. Since the beginning of Sunday night’s game in Bowie, Maruszak is 7-8 with six runs batted in, all of which were driven in with two outs.
Trailing 6-2 entering the top of the sixth, Trenton‘s offense erupted for one of its most productive innings of the entire season. After back-to-back RBI-singles from Ray Kruml and Jose Pirela cut Akron’s lead to 6-5, Rob Lyerly drove in two runs with his ground rule double to left-centerfield to give the Thunder their first lead of the night. Two batters later, Damon Sublett grounded a ball sharply off of the glove of Akron’s Mike McBride at first base to bring in two runs to make it 9-6 Thunder. In all, 12 men came to the plate in the seven-run outburst, the second time this season that Trenton has scored seven runs in one frame.
Akron cut the score to 9-8 when McBride drove in two runs with a single in the eighth, but Ryan Pope set down the final four outs to pick-up his second save in as many nights. The win marks the second straight road victory for the Thunder. Entering Sunday’s contest in Bowie, Trenton had lost 11 straight road games and had not won away from Waterfront Park since June 26.
