(PR) (Harrisburg, PA) – The Harrisburg Senators (68-53) took advantage of four early errors by the Trenton Thunder (60-60) on Sunday night on their way to a 4-2 victory at Metro Bank Park in the series finale. The win, the Senators’ second in three games in the series, marks the fourth straight series loss for the Thunder. Trenton, just 13-28 in July and August combined, finishes the season series with the Senators, dropping nine of 13 contests. Picking up where the team left off in Saturday’s first inning, the Thunder grabbed an early lead on Sunday evening with an early run. In the top of the first, Jose Pirela reached second base when the Senators committed two errors on the same play, a fielding and throwing error. The next batter, Ray Kruml, lined a single to centerfield to give Trenton the early 1-0 lead.
However, that was all of the offense the Thunder could muster off of Senators starter Erik Arnesen, who shut the Trenton bats down to the tune of just an unearned run on four hits in seven innings. The New Jersey-native Arnesen struck out 10 batters and retired 17 of 20 Thunder hitters in the last six innings of his outing.
Having not scored a run since the top of the first inning, the Thunder were able to put another run on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth against Senators’ reliever Pat Lehman. Addison Maruszak led the frame off with a ground-rule double to right-centerfield. Pinch hitting for Ryan Baker, Corban Joseph then lined a single to centerfield to score Maruszak and cut into the Harrisburg lead that now stood at just 4-2.
After Pat Venditte hurled 1-2-3 eighth inning, the Thunder entered the top of the ninth inning trailing by two runs. But, Pat McCoy and Rafael Martin combined to shut down the Thunder in order in the ninth to preserve the victory and the series win on Sunday evening for Harrisburg.
With the three-game set with the Harrisburg Senators behind them, the Thunder begin a four-game set with the Erie SeaWolves on Tuesday at Jerry Uht Park. Making up a game that was rained out in May, the two teams will participate in a doubleheader on Tuesday with two seven-inning contests beginning at 6:05 PM. Trenton will give the game one start to LHP Shaeffer Hall (10-6, 4.23) and will send RHP Cory Arbiso (4-4, 5.00) to the mound for game two. Erie will counter with LHP Jay Voss (7-6, 3.80) in game one and LHP Ramon Garcia (3-3, 4.81) in game two.
