Bats Breakout In Big Win

(PR) (Erie, PA) – Ray Kruml and Yadil Mujica combined for eight hits and the Trenton Thunder (61-62) got a much-needed, 9-6 win over the Erie SeaWolves (59-64) on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park. Kruml also joined Damon Sublett and Melky Mesa to each drive in two runs to lead the Thunder to just their fourth win in 15 games in the month of August. The win breaks a three-game losing streak for the Thunder, who win for just the eleventh time in 33 games on the road against the Western Division in 2011.Trailing 2-0 entering the top of the third inning, the Thunder struck for one of their better offensive outbursts in the entire month. With one out and the bases loaded, Rob Lyerly lined a single into right field to put the Thunder on the scoreboard for the first time in the game. With the bases sill loaded, Melky Mesa then flied out to right field to tie the score at 2-2. Later in the inning with two outs, Damon Sublett laced a two-run single to left field to give Trenton their first lead of the series at 4-2.

The Trenton offense was back at it in the top of the fourth after Erie tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mesa drew a walk to regain the lead for the Thunder and to chase Erie starter L.J. Gagnier from the game. The next batter, Ray Kruml, lined a ball into the gap in left field to score two and put the Thunder ahead for good 7-4.

Steve Garrison, who made his fourteenth start of the season, was only able to last four frames and left with his team ahead 7-4. Chase Whitley took over and provided a huge lift by hurling three scoreless frames to pick up his third win of the season. Late in the game, the Thunder added two big insurance runs on Addison Maruszak’s solo homerun and Yadil Mujica’s ninth inning RBI.

The Thunder and SeaWolves will play the finale of their four-game set on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park at 7:05 PM. Trenton’s RHP Craig Heyer (9-6, 3.72) will get the start opposite of Erie’s RHP Brooks Brown (2-8, 6.65).
