(PR) (Erie, PA) – Abraham Almonte reached base all five he batted including a home run and Brett Marshall pitched six solid innings as the Thunder defeated the Erie SeaWovles, 6-2, Tuesday at Jerry Uht Park to take their second straight in the three-game series. After dropping the first three games of the road trip, Trenton has now won a season-best three straight and will go for the sweep Wednesday afternoon.
Almonte went 3-for-3 with two walks, his second home run of the season, a double, three runs scored and two stolen bases. The leadoff batter for the Thunder, who entered the game mired in a 2-for-26 slump, also made some fine defensive plays in left field to help Marshall (2-1).
Marshall took a 4-0 lead into the seventh when he allowed consecutive hits and was removed in favor of Francisco Rondon. Rondon allowed each inherited runner to score but escaped further damage by getting Jamie Johnson to ground out with the tying runners in scoring position.
Then Trenton added an insurance run in the eighth when Walter Ibarra singled home Addison Maruszak from second with two outs in the inning. Almonte clubbed his home run to lead off the ninth against Robbie Weinhardt, a high drive over the left-centerfield fence that made the score 6-2.
Luke Murton’s sac fly started the scoring in the first against Erie starter Jay Voss (0-3), who would leave after appearing to injure his throwing arm while warming up for the second inning. He was relieved by Zach Samuels, who was hit by a Dan Brewer line-drive base hit on the very first pitch he threw. Samuels would also leave the game injured.
Zoilo Almonte and Murton each added RBI hits in the third against reliever Ramon Garcia, while Ronnier Mustelier added a sac fly in the fourth that made the score 4-0.
Game three of the series will be Wednesday afternoon with first pitch is scheduled for 12:35 pm. Thunder righty Cory Arbiso (0-0) is expected to pitch against Erie righty Zack Segovia (0-1). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and streaming online begins at 12:20 pm.
