Hard Hittin’ New Britain

July 4, 2012

(PR) (Trenton, NJ) – New Britain scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and defeat the Trenton Thunder, 3-2, Wednesday in front of 7,509 fans at Waterfront Park. Chris Colabello’s RBI single against Kelvin Perez in the eighth provided the difference as the Rock Cats improved to 4-1 against the Thunder this season.
Addison Maruszak’s solo home run, his second in as many games and ninth of the season, gave Trenton a 2-1 lead after three innings against New Britain starter Logan Darnell. Zoilo Almonte followed Maruszak and hit what was initially ruled a home run down the right field line, but the call was reversed by the umpires, who changed it to a foul ball. The Thunder would not score again.

Mikey O’Brien held the Rock Cats to only one run in six innings on three hits. But Perez allowed three hits in the seventh including Deibinson Romero’s game-tying RBI single. Then with two on and two out in the eighth, Colabello grounded the winning hit into left field.

Maruszak collected three of the Thunder’s seven hits. Romero homered and drove in a pair for New Britain.

The Thunder and Rock Cats continue the three-game series Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Trenton right-hander Dellin Betances (0-0, 0.00) is slated to start against righty B.J. Hermsen (4-4, 3.60). Limited tickets are available by contacting the Thunder box office at 609-394-3300 or online at

Catching Up…

July 4, 2012

— Obviously, all hell broke loose after I left Portland.  As Josh Norris initially reported, after Monday night’s doubleheader sweep, Rob Segedin, Neil Medchill and J.R. Murphy were all promoted to Double-A Trenton and Kyle Higashioka was sent back to Tampa.  Early Tuesday, Jose Gil was placed on the disabled list and Sean Black was also demoted.

Then Tuesday’s game happened — which Trenton won, 11-3 — and since those three players were never going to join the team until today, reliever Lee Hyde had to play left field when Damon Sublett was injured late in the game.  It’s almost like they should have kept Higashioka around…

Shane Brown got activated today when Sublett went down with left groin tightness.

— I’ll be back on the beat Thursday.  Taking today off to celebrate six months together with my lovely girlfriend, Candice.

— I never got to post Vidal Nuno’s comments  on winning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.  So…here are Vidal Nuno’s comments on winning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week…

“(I’ve never won) anything like that in the minor leagues,” Nuno said.  “It felt great when skip came in the locker room and told me that I was Pitcher of the Week.  It’s a great honor for what I’ve been doing, it’s a nice compliment.

— I posted some video on my YouTube account that I never posted here.  Happens often. is the place, kids.
