(PR) (Akron, OH) – One day after the team allowed a season-high 14 runs, Vidal Nuño combined with two relievers on a five-hit shutout as the Trenton Thunder blanked the Akron Aeros, 3-0, Thursday night at Canal Park. The win coupled with a loss by New Britain moved the Thunder’s (74-57) magic number for clinching a playoff berth to six and for clinching the Eastern Division title to seven.
Nuño (8-5) snapped a three-start losing skid by tossing six innings of four-hit ball. He walked only one and fanned three. Mark Montgomery threw two scoreless innings behind Nuño while Ryan Pope threw the ninth to finish the team’s eighth shutout victory of the season.
Trenton scored all the offense it would need in the second inning against Akron starter Brett Brach (3-7). Zoilo Almonte led off with a double followed by a walk to Luke Murton, and Addison Maruszak followed with an RBI hit to right. Kevin Mahoney then grounded into a double play scoring Murton from third base and making the score 2-0.
Almonte scored a run in the eighth on a wild pitch to provide some insurance. He went 3-for-4 on the night and scored two of Trenton’s three runs. Jordan Henry collected two of Akron’s five hits.
The teams continue the series on Friday night at 7:05 pm, with right-hander Mikey O’Brien (4-6, 4.62) expected to start for Trenton while Akron counters with righty Paolo Espino (7-2, 3.05). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
