(PR) Erie, PA) – Nik Turley and two relievers combined to limit the red-hot Erie offense to one run and Casey Stevenson hit his first Double-A home run as the Trenton Thunder topped the SeaWolves, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at ice-cold Jerry Uht Park. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for Trenton (9-7) and also broke Erie’s (8-7) four-game winning streak in a game that was played with wind chill temperatures in the upper-20s.
The top-15 Yankee prospect Turley (1-1) had his best effort of the young season, working 5.2 innings and allowing only one run on four hits. The southpaw struck out five and threw exactly 100 pitches. Danny Burawa tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in back of Turley and Tommy Kahnle pitched an eventful ninth to earn his third save.
With the score tied a 1 in the fourth, Stevenson lined Kyle Lobstein’s (1-2) pitch over the right field fence to put the Thunder ahead to stay. Then in the sixth, Stevenson, the Trenton left fielder, threw out an Erie runner attempting to move to third base on a single. The out at third occurred by the lead runner Ramon Cabrera crossed home plate, negating what would’ve been the game-tying run.
Ramon Flores’ two-out RBI single in the eighth increased the Thunder lead to 3-1. Kahnle allowed a walk and a single in the ninth to put the tying runners on base, but he struck out the side including getting Jamie Johnson swinging to end the game.
Kyle Roller’s infield RBI single in the top of the third opened the scoring, before Johnson tied it in the bottom of the inning for Erie with a run-scoring double. Roller had three of Trenton’s 11 hits, while Tyler Austin had a pair of hits and a pair of walks.
The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:35 pm as Trenton ties for the split. Right-hander Zach Nuding (0-1, 1.98) is expected to start for Trenton while Erie counters with righty Patrick Cooper (0-1, 9.-00).
