One Hit? One Loss

(PR) (Akron, OH) – Akron starting pitcher Paolo Espino carried a no-hitter until one out in the seventh inning and the Aeros held Trenton to just one hit on the night in a 7-1 win over the Thunder Tuesday night at Canal Park. Espino (1-0) was masterful, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing one run and one hit with four strikeouts.

Akron scored a pair of runs in the first, third and sixth innings to take command of the contest. Trenton starter Matt Tracy (1-2) issued ten hits in his 5.1 innings of work and was charged with five runs. Aeros first baseman Chun Chen collected RBI singles in the first and third innings to help build the lead.

Espino cruised through the first four innings and ended up retiring the first 13 batters he faced before issuing consecutive walks to Kyle Roller and Slade Heathcott with one out in the fifth. Roller later ended the no-hit bid by doubling to left field with one out in the seventh.

Heathcott drove home Trenton’s lone run by following Roller with a sacrifice fly that scored Tyler Austin, who had led off the inning with a walk.

The rubber match of the three-game series will be played Wednesday night, with right-hander Caleb Cotham (1-1, 4.85) expected to start for the Thunder while the Aeros counter with righty Toru Murata (1-2, 2.20). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:20 pm.
