(PR) ((Bowie, MD) – Down to a final out and a final strike in the ninth, Trenton rallied for three two-out runs to take the lead and the Thunder held on for a 5-4 victory Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium. Tyler Austin’s two-out infield RBI single highlighted the comeback that allowed Trenton to snap a three-game skid and even the series at one win apiece.
With the Baysox leading 3-2 entering the ninth, Walter Ibarra led off against reliever Tom Boleksa (2-3) with an infield single to second base as he slid head-first into the bag to beat second baseman Josh Horton’s throw. One out later Ramon Flores walked to put two runners aboard.
Boleska struck out Slade Heathcott for the second out and recorded two strikes on Austin, who was jammed by a pitch and fisted a one hopper towards shallow right. Horton moved back and tried to field the ball but it glanced off his glove, allowing Ibarra to score the tying run from second.
After a walk to JR Murphy loaded the bases, Bowie brought in righty Clay Schraeder to face Kyle Roller, and Roller was hit by a pitch to plate Flores with the go-ahead run. Neil Medchill then walked to complete the three-run rally, during which Trenton sent nine batters to the plate.
Tommy Kahnle allowed a two-out solo home run to Garabez Rosa in the bottom of the ninth, but the closer then fanned Brian Ward to end the game and record his fifth save of the season. Matt Daley (2-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless inning to earn the win.
The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:05 pm. Left-hander Matt Tracy (4-3, 6.43) expected to start for the Thunder while the Baysox counter with righty Mike Wright (6-0, 3.69). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 1:50 pm.
