So, it’s weird doing post-game notes for the Thunder when you’re serving as the other team’s beat writer. But let me give this a quick shot.
Sea Dogs starter Henry Owens said after the game that he “stunk.” Rated the fifth-best prospect in the Red Sox system coming into this season by Baseball America, Owens couldn’t command much of anything on Thursday night and got pulled after failing to retire a batter in the fourth inning.
But Trenton couldn’t capitalize. Portland catcher Christian Vazquez picked off Carmen Angelini at third — sparking a massive argument by and subsequent ejection of Tony Franklin — and reliever Pete Ruiz somehow managed to shut the door after that. Portland’s win pulls them to within four games of the Thunder for the second and final playoff spot in the division, and those two teams are certainly not done playing each other this season.
Before the game, Franklin spoke at length about how a lot of his new players would need time to adjust to the new level…but here’s the thing, they don’t have that time to spare. The playoffs are well within the Thunder’s grasp, but so are plane tickets home after the last game of the regular season if they can’t right the ship.
