ELDS Game 1: Pre-Game Notes

6:00 PM — “We’re excited about (facing Syndergaard).  It’s going to be a long night for him.”

Those were the words of Tyler Austin before the game.  In about four hours, we’ll all find out how true they are.  Trenton faces arguably one of the top prospects in all of baseball tonight, but here’s the thing…Bryan Mitchell is no pushover either.

“I think Mitchell is going to give them something to look at tonight,” said Thunder manager Tony Franklin.  “As much as Noah Syndergaard is going to give us something to look at, I think it’s going to be a pretty good matchup.”

Franklin downplayed facing Syndergaard…

“We’re going to approach this just like we always do, I just can’t see doing it any other way,” he said.  “I don’t think just because there’s a lot written about how good this kid is — and let’s face it, he’s pretty good… — when we’re facing pitchers of this caliber, we approach it like any other pitcher.  We know he’s good, and if we can get to him early, we’ve got a shot.  That’s the way we have to look at it.”

Franklin also downplayed his team being the underdog in the series, having finished 12 games behind the B-Mets in the standings.

“The amount of games that we were behind is no indication of how good I think we are,” he said.  “But let’s face it, Binghamton has had a year like no other…how often do you get to have a year like that?  You have years like that because you have good baseball players.”

4:45 PM — Noah Syndergaard is pitching.  What else do you need to know?  Lineups?  Fine, fine…

Trenton: Williams CF, Flores LF, Pirela 2B, Sanchez C, Austin RF, Roller 1B, Gamel DH, Corona 3B, Castillo SS, Mitchell P

Binghamton: Muno 2B, Rodriguez 3B, Hughes 1B, Dykstra DH, Vaughn LF, Taijeron RF, Ceciliani CF, Forsythe C, Tovar SS, Syndergaard P
