Report: Coke Failed Physical

This published report indicates that Thunder starter Phil Coke failed his physical, which follows up on previous reports in the Pittsburgh area that either Coke or Kontos had labrum issues that led to them being removed from the deal.

With as careful as the Yankees are with injuries — merely asking a trainer about one will earn you death stares — I find it hard to believe that they would be throwing an injured pitcher out there every fifth day.

I’ll ask again tomorrow, but keep in mind that Tony Franklin didn’t know anything about this the other day, and Coke had no idea as to the reason as to why he was removed from the deal.

The injury must have occured during the season, as I think they are given a thorough physical before each Spring Training starts. At least I would feel better if thats the way it happened.

Any possibility that flogging Pittsburgh was receiving for not receiving enough for Marte and Nady – that coming up with a medical flag would allow them to change the perception that they were only robbed and not fleeced.

My curiousity is their fundamental shift in changing from AA prospects to AAA/AAAA players that will be called up by September. After all if Coke truly failed the physical – why not keep Kontos then….

Things that make you go hmmm…..

If anyone should have put up injury red flags, it was Kontos, given that he missed two months last season. But even Kontos has made every start this season.

If the Yankees were going to keep Phil Hughes out for 3+ months with a fractured rib, you’d think they’d be even more careful if a pitcher had shoulder trouble.

    Wasn’t Kontos the bar fight?
I remember thinking that he must’ve never seen Bull Durham

  5. Bob Says:

Yup Kontos’s injury was caused by the fight.

    Mike,
I find it hard to believe that Coke would nopt be aware he had some fraying in the shoulder if he does. It is something you can pitch with. I beleive the Yanks 2nd round pick has a similar problem according to reports. That is why they are slow on signing him. It would be nice if some truth was told by the player or manegement, not that it matters much!

I find it hard to believe the injury rumors about Coke. After all, he has gone out there almost every 5th day all season. I understand that he is now being sent to the pen because of his innings cap.

Sounds to me like the Yankees know what they are doing, and the Pirates needed to get a couple of AAA guys, so they can at least show their fans that they have some “near-ready” kids coming along.

Still a great trade for teh Yankees,.
