Quotebook: Tony Franklin

April 7, 2009

So far, Trenton Thunder manager Tony Franklin is batting 1.000 when it comes to bringing championships to Waterfront Park.

He’s hoping to lead his club to back-to-back-to-back championships, which would make the Thunder the first Eastern League team to win three straight since the Harrisburg Senators actually won four consecutive titles from 1996-99.

In a lengthy session with the media, Franklin addressed a wide variety of topics…

“I think we’re going to be a competitive group.  I like our pitching, I think we’re going to be fine again in that area.  But let’s face it, over the past couple of years we’ve probably pitched better than any minor league team in baseball.  That’s something that you never think would happen.  But I think we have those types of people in the organization and it’s the same again this year.  I think the starters are going to be very competitive.  We’ll see about our bullpen, but I think we have guys down there who are going to get the job done.  I like our group, and I think we have a chance.  The next stop is to go out and play and prove it.”

“Cervelli gives us a big edge behind home plate.  He’s a game changer.  The guy can catch and throw as well as anybody I’ve seen, and I think he’ll run the staff well.  And that’s saying a mouthful simply because we had P.J. for the last couple of years and he won two championships and did a tremendous job.  I think Cervelli can do the same thing.”

“You never know how you’re going to hit.  It’s a young group of players.  I believe that defense and pitching is the cornerstone of winning championships and playing good baseball.  I feel we do have some guys in the lineup who are going to be able to hit.  We’ve got Malec back, we’ve got Curtis, we’ve got Edwar and we’ve got Vechionacci, who started out like a ball of fire last year, and we’ve got Reegie back, who had a pretty good offensive year.  Fortenberry’s new and Nunez is new.  So I think we’ve got some guys who are familiar with the league and put some pretty decent numbers up and I think we’ll handle our own.  We’ll be competitive, we’ll be right there.”

“Number one, (Reegie) is familiar with the league.  He had a pretty good season himself, so he knows exactly what it takes to do it again.  Number two, I think that having that experience at the Major League level and having a chance to be around these guys, Major League players, it can only help him.  You get a firsthand look at how they go about their business and how they prepare themselves and how they play the game.  That’s invaluable experience and information that you gain, and hopefully you bring that.  He should bring that with him to this level.  With his ability to play the game the way it is now, it can’t do anything but be good for him.”

“It’s not easy (to tell the two guys they’re getting cut), and it’s not easy to explain that to them.  But it’s my job to do it, and hopefully they will understand why.  I think explaining to them why is more important than anything else.  You can accept your assignment if you understand why it’s being made.  Moves aren’t always popular, but they’re necessary.”

“I think we’ve got a pretty good staff.  Eric Hacker finished the year as probably our best starter, and I expect the same.  I think Eric learned a lot…the first game he pitched for us last year, it took about four hours.  We couldn’t get him going.  By the season’s end, he was rolling.  His tempo picked up, his pitches were sharper, he was able to exploit hitter’s weaknesses a lot better.  I’ve got to give Scott Aldred a lot of credit for that.  Eric is returning and I think he’ll be fine.”

“George is returning and he’s throwing well right now.  Zach McAllister comes with some fine credentials.  Nova was Rule 5’d, and he’s back with us.  Garcia was a little injured, and we’re waiting on him.  But we’ve got Pope, who we think is going to pitch well.  I think we’ve got enough.”

Thunder Thoughts On Media Day

April 7, 2009

– It was cold.

– Players were supposed to be available from 1:30-3 PM, but because it was so cold, they all bailed and went inside.  Some of the pitchers came out and hung out in the bullpen, where we can’t go, and some of the hitters went back into the clubhouse, which was oddly off-limits during this whole thing.

None of this was the media relations staff’s fault, and I do give them all credit for trying to help those of us left out in trying to get who we needed.  I did read the comments in who you guys wanted to hear from today, and I did try twice to talk to Francisco Cervelli, but he was never ultimately available.

– It was cold.

– Seems to me there are a few scenarios that get the Thunder down to 24 players.  All of them seem to involve Jose Gil either being inactive or getting sent down somewhere…I think his inclusion on the roster in the first place surprised a lot of people to start with.  Many people seem to be suggesting Justin Snyder will be sent down, but it also seems possible that Ivan Nova could either get “paper moved” somewhere, simply made inactive or put on the phantom DL to temporarily clear a space.  If he isn’t pitching until April 17th, why have him take up a roster spot?  I specifically asked Tommy Phelps if Nova would come out of the pen before he started, and he said that wasn’t going to happen because they need to stretch him out.

– It was cold.

– Many of the players have changed numbers from last season.  James Cooper looks weird in Austin Jackson’s #31.  I joked with Colin Curtis that he tried to double his #24 from last season, but his math sucks.  He’s wearing #47 this year.  George Kontos is wearing #22, not #20.  Eric Wordekemper is in #54, not #50.  I could go on.  It’ll take a little while to get used to.

– It was cold.

–  Also, jersey nerds, it seems the players are wearing new Russell jerseys this year.  I believe they’ve worn Russell jerseys recently, but these have Russell patches on the neck that previous years jerseys did not have.

– It was cold.

– The championship banner/flag/metal thing was being affixed to the top of the ballpark in the area behind home plate, next to where the 2007…thing sits.  Someone was up on a ladder getting it straightened out.

– It was cold.  OK, seriously.  It was cold and nasty and windy out.  If you’re coming out to any of the games this week…bring a blanket, or wear layers…or do something that makes you not shiver like an idiot.

Downloadable Audio Cuts From Media Day

April 7, 2009

Part of what I think makes Thunder Thoughts moderately successful is that you get to hear from the players on a regular basis…so why not actually let you hear from the players?

I’m going to try a lot harder this year to implement more audio on the blog this year.  Files will be MP3’s that can be downloaded via Sendspace.

Here are some files for you to check out from Thunder Media Day:

Quotebook: Tommy Phelps

April 7, 2009

Former big league pitcher Tommy Phelps has joined the Thunder as their new pitching coach, and was kind enough to take a few minutes to discuss his new pitching staff with reporters during the Thunder’s Media Day session…

“The rotation will be Hack, Kontos, McAllister, Pope…then we have an off day, then those four guys again, and then Nova.  We’re building up Nova’s pitches because he was over in big league camp and I think only pitched an inning each time.  He threw three innings yesterday, he’s going to throw five the next time out for 70 pitches and then he’ll be ready.”

“Garcia’s got to build his pitches up.  He’s got to start playing catch first, but we’re anxious to have him back.  He has great stuff, he’s a great kid with a bright future.  There’s really no set timetable (with him), we have to go with how he feels.”

“They need to build (Sanchez’s) arm strength up, and there’s also a dual concern with the cold weather and him coming back from surgeries and stuff.  Once he gets stronger and gets ready, he’ll be up here.”

“Garcia got quite a few innings (in big league camp), especially for being a new guy.  He got I think three or four outings, but when he got into camp, his elbow flared up a bit on him.  I think both of us those guys are coming off of injuries, so you never know how those guys are going to act in the cold weather.”

“We’re not too set on (bullpen roles) yet.  We’ve got a few guys that are going to share that (closer role) for now and go from there.  Dunn’s going to be the long guy for us with multiple innings, and Texeira, who we got in the trade.  Whelan will be a multiple inning guy.  But I think our bullpen is pretty good, you know.”

“To be honest with you, most of (the bullpen) guys pitched for Triple-A, so I hardly saw any of them this spring.  For the first month or so, I’m going to be learning these guys myself a little bit.”

“There’s a few guys (who I saw in Tampa) who pitched well for us down there.  Hovis pitched well for us down there, he’s starting out in Tampa and he’s a guy that could have made our team.  Heyer, he pitched well.  (Tony Franklin added Jay Stephens name).  There’s another guy, the Cuban defector.  They want him to stay in the warm weather.”

“I think we’re going to have a pretty good bullpen.  With this cold weather, if we get inside on some of these hitters, we’ll be all right.”

Quotebook: Zach McAllister

April 7, 2009

Of the Yankees Top 10 prospects as rated by Baseball America, only Zach McAllister will start the 2009 season on the Thunder roster.

Friday night, the big righty will make his Double-A debut against the Binghamton Mets, weather permitting.

At Trenton’s Media Day event on Tuesday afternoon, I asked McAllister about getting to Double-A this season and what people should expect from him this year…

“I’m kind of excited to get here.  It’s something I’ve been working for, I keep trying to advance every year.  I’m just excited and ready to get going.”

“I don’t think about (the prospect status).  I mean, even if you’re the worst guy on the team, you’ve still got to go out and prove something.  If you’re the best, you’ve got to go out and prove why you’re the best.  Either way, I’ve just got to go out there and try to prove myself every time.”

“I think my secondary pitches have developed a lot better (since his first pro season), and just the confidence I have…whether I had a rough outing the time before, to not carry it over and just be even keel all the way through is something I’ve learned a lot.”

“I’m looking forward to (Friday), I’m excited.  It’s the start of a new season.  Everything I had at the end of last year, I’m going to try to carry over to this year.”

“I try to have quick tempo, a lot of quick innings for the most part, and just try to keep the other team off the scoreboard.”
